Dry Eye Syndrome

Dry eye syndrome, also known as keratitis sicca, is a condition in which there are insufficient tears to lubricate and nourish the eye. Tears are necessary for maintaining the health of the front surface of the eye and for providing clear vision. People with dry eyes either do not produce enough tears, or have a poor quality of tears.

Risk factors for dry eye are environmental, medications, medical conditions, age, and contact lens use. Dry eye is a common and often chronic problem, particularly in older adults. Common symptoms include irritated, gritty, scratchy, or burning eyes, a feeling of something in their eyes, excess watering, and blurred vision. Vision can be subsequently blurred when flare-ups occur. Advanced dry eyes may damage the front surface of the eye and impair vision.

Dr. Yonkee will examine the tear film on the eye and produce a treatment plan specifically tailored for the patient. If you feel that you are suffering from one or more of these symptoms contact Total Vision Family Eye Care for an appointment today.
